Mombasa is Kenya's port and the entry point for most of the country's imports, which makes it the centre of the marine and cargo insurance market. It is also a major tourism economy, so hospitality liability and travel cover matter here in a way they do not inland.

Local Risk Profile
Cargo handling, storage and inland transit generate the highest marine claim volumes in Kenya. Salt air accelerates corrosion on vehicles and machinery, and low-lying areas of the island and Nyali flood in the long rains. Tourism creates seasonal public liability exposure.
Main routes we rate against
Mombasa-Nairobi Highway (A8), Mombasa-Malindi Road (B8), Dongo Kundu Bypass and Likoni Ferry crossing

Questions
Yes, this is one of our core Coast products. We write single-shipment policies for one-off imports and open cover for regular importers, on Institute Cargo Clauses A, B or C. Cover can run warehouse-to-warehouse, so your goods stay insured on the road to Nairobi, not just at sea.
In practice yes. Kenyan law requires that cargo imported into the country be insured with a locally licensed insurer, and clearing agents will ask for the certificate. Arranging it before the vessel sails is both cheaper and safer than doing it at the last minute.
It affects claims more than premiums. Corrosion itself is wear and tear and is never covered, but it makes accident repairs more expensive and can complicate valuations on older vehicles. Comprehensive cover on a coastal vehicle is worth reviewing every renewal so the sum insured stays realistic.
Send us what you need covered. Quotes from several underwriters come back the same working day, and cover can start immediately.
